Neutron microtomography to investigate the bone-implant interface—comparison with histological analysis

چکیده
Abstract Bone properties and especially its microstructure around implants are crucial to evaluate the osseointegration of prostheses in orthopaedic, maxillofacial dental surgeries. Given intrinsic heterogeneous nature bone microstructure, an ideal probing tool understand quantify formation must be spatially resolved. X-ray imaging has often been employed, but is limited presence metallic implants, where severe artifacts generally arise from high attenuation metals x-rays. Neutron tomography recently proposed as a promising technique study bone-implant interfaces, thanks lower interaction with metals. The aim this assess potential neutron for characterisation tissue vicinity implant. A standardised implant chamber was implanted rabbit bone. Four specimens were imaged subsequently compared non-decalcified histology stain soft mineralised tissues, used here ground-truth reference. An intensity-based image registration procedure performed place 12 histological slices within corresponding 3D volume. Significant correlations ( p < 0.01) obtained between two modalities contact BIC ) ratio R = 0.77) content inside 0.89). results indicate that can reliably detected by tomography. However, found overestimated imaging, which may explained sensitivity non-mineralised revealed staining. This highlights suitability analysis interface. Future work will focus on further distinguishing tissues tissue, could aided adoption contrast agents.

Autologous bone graft harvested during implant site preparation: histological study
Aim: The bone particles harvested during osteotomy could be used as autogenous bone graft materials to correct a bony defect prior to implant placement. Methods: A simple surgical procedure was described in which autogenous bone was harvested from the drills during the preparation of implant sites. Eleven samples were obtained from bone drilling during fi xture installation in 11 patients (5 me...
متن کاملNeutron microtomography of voids in gold
Pilot attempt of the neutron microtomography of voids in gold carried out using the Neutron Microscope instrument is presented in the paper. The paper demonstrates that neutron microtomography provides viable alternative to X-ray imaging for the assessment of porosity in high atomic number materials. The model sample based on gold with artificially induced void system reveals segmented porosity...

Breast and prostate cancers are specially metastasizing to bone. Metastases from breast cancer usually exhibit a mixed osteolytic/osteosclerotic aspect, with osteolysis predominating. Osteosclerosis is a common finding in prostatic cancer although osteolysis occurs within the sclerotic lesions. B-cell malignancies (lymphoma, myeloma) are also associated with marked osteolysis. Histopathological...
متن کاملComparison of bone-implant contact and bone-implant volume between 2D-histological sections and 3D-SRµCT slices.
Histological imaging is still considered the gold standard for analysing bone formation around metallic implants. Generally, a limited number of histological sections per sample are used for the approximation of mean values of peri-implant bone formation. In this study we compared statistically the results of bone-implant contact (BIC) and bone-implant volume (BIV) obtained by histological sect...
